PTFE MOLDED SHEETS FAQ

What are PTFE sheets, and what makes them unique?

PTFE sheets (Polytetrafluoroethylene), also known by the trade name Teflon®, are semi-finished fluoropolymer products known for their exceptional chemical resistance, low friction, and high-temperature stability.

Unique properties of PTFE sheets:

  • Continuous service temperature: up to 260 °C
  • Outstanding chemical resistance – inert to nearly all chemicals
  • Lowest coefficient of friction among plastics → non-stick surface
  • Excellent electrical insulation properties
  • UV, weather, and moisture resistant
  • FDA-compliant grades available for food and pharmaceutical use

In short: PTFE sheets are the gold standard for chemical resistance, non-stick performance, and high-temperature use.

PTFE sheets are manufactured by skiving, molding, or extrusion, offering a wide selection of thicknesses and formats.

Thickness range:

  • Thin films: 0.05 mm – 3 mm (skived sheets/films)
  • Standard sheets: 3 mm – 50 mm
  • Thick molded plates: up to 100 mm+ on request

Sheet sizes:

  • Common: 1000 × 1000 mm1200 × 1200 mm, and 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft)
  • Custom-cut panels and rolls available

Surface finishes:

  • Smooth natural finish (white, opaque)
  • Etched PTFE sheets → for adhesive bonding
  • Glass-filled, carbon-filled, or bronze-filled grades → improved wear, stiffness, or conductivity

PTFE sheets can be supplied in ultra-thin films, standard stock, or thick plates — depending on your application.

PTFE sheets are widely used across industries thanks to their non-stick, chemical-resistant, and insulating properties.

Key industries & applications:

  • Chemical processing → Tank linings, gaskets, pump parts, seals
  • Electronics & semiconductors → Insulating barriers, circuit protection, dielectric sheets
  • Food & pharmaceuticals → FDA-approved non-stick conveyor belts, cutting boards, and lining surfaces
  • Aerospace & automotive → Lightweight seals, wear parts, fuel system barriers
  • Industrial manufacturing → Sliding bearings, wear strips, anti-friction surfaces

From chemical tanks to food plants, PTFE sheets are used wherever extreme resistance and non-stick properties are required.

PTFE is one of the most chemically inert and thermally stable plastics available.

Temperature performance:

  • Continuous use up to 260 °C
  • Cryogenic stability down to -200 °C
  • Does not degrade in UV or outdoor conditions

Wear & friction:

  • Ultra-low friction surface (non-stick)
  • Moderate wear resistance (can be improved with fillers like glass or carbon)
  • Excellent anti-seize & anti-galling properties

Chemical resistance:

  • Resistant to almost all industrial chemicals, solvents, acids, and bases
  • Insoluble in water and most solvents
  • Not suitable for molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine

If you need a plastic that resists nearly everything and performs from cryogenic to high-heat conditions, PTFE sheets are unmatched.

While all are fluoropolymers, PTFE is the benchmark for chemical resistance and temperature stability.

PTFE vs. PFA sheets:

  • Both resist up to 260 °C
  • PTFE → non-melt-processable, softer, more flexible
  • PFA → melt-processable, weldable, more stress-crack resistant

PTFE vs. FEP sheets:

  • FEP → extrudable, transparent, service temp up to 200 °C
  • PTFE → opaque, higher heat resistance, better creep resistance

PTFE vs. PVDF sheets:

  • PVDF → stronger, tougher, lower cost, withstands 150 °C
  • PTFE → more chemically inert, withstands 260 °C

 Summary guide:

  • Choose PTFE sheets → for maximum chemical and temperature resistance
  • Choose PFA sheets → for weldability and purity
  • Choose FEP sheets → for clarity and continuous extrusion
  • Choose PVDF sheets → for strength, rigidity, and outdoor weatherability

PTFE sheets are highly machinable, though they are not melt-processable like PFA or FEP.

Machining:

  • Machines cleanly with sharp tools
  • Softness allows easy cutting but requires care to avoid deformation
  • Often used as stock for gaskets, seals, and insulating parts

Fabrication:

  • Bonding → requires etched PTFE surfaces for adhesives
  • Welding → not possible by melt methods (PTFE cannot be thermally welded)
  • Skiving → thin films can be produced by peeling from large billets

Modified PTFE options:

  • Filled PTFE (glass, carbon, bronze) for improved wear & load-bearing capacity
  • Expanded PTFE sheets for sealing (soft, compressible gasket material)

PTFE sheets are best suited for machining into precision parts, sealing components, and non-stick linings
