PFA Extruded Sheets – FAQs

PFA extruded sheets are semi-finished products made from perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) resin, a melt-processable fluoropolymer closely related to PTFE. They are produced by melt extrusion, which allows for continuous, uniform sheet production.

Comparison with PTFE & FEP sheets:

  • PTFE sheets: Chemically similar, but non-melt processable (must be molded or skived). PFA offers the same chemical resistance but is extrudable, weldable, and thermoformable.
  • FEP sheets: Like PFA, FEP is extrudable, but PFA withstands higher service temperatures (~260 °C vs. 200 °C)and has better mechanical endurance.
  • PFA advantage: Combines PTFE’s chemical inertness with FEP’s processability — making it the most versatile fluoropolymer sheet.

Key properties of PFA extruded sheets:

  • Service temperature: up to 260 °C
  • Excellent chemical resistance (acids, bases, solvents)
  • Transparency and clarity, similar to FEP
  • Good mechanical strength and stress-crack resistance
  • Non-stick, low-friction surface

In short: PFA sheets are the premium fluoropolymer solution where durability, chemical resistance, and fabrication flexibility are required.

PFA extruded sheets are available in multiple thicknesses, widths, and formats, from thin films to heavy plates.

Thickness range:

  • Ultra-thin films: 0.05 mm – 0.5 mm
  • Standard sheets: 1 mm – 10 mm
  • Heavy plates: Up to 15 mm+ on request

Widths & lengths:

  • Standard widths: 300 mm – 1200 mm
  • Continuous rolls: For thinner gauges (<2 mm)
  • Cut-to-size sheets: Supplied for thicker plates

Surface finish options:

  • Plain (smooth) → for general chemical/electrical use
  • Etched sheets → for adhesive bonding
  • Adhesive-backed sheets → for easy installation

Whether you need ultra-thin flexible rolls or thick structural plates, PFA extrusion covers both ends of the spectrum.

PFA sheets are widely used where extreme chemical resistance, purity, and thermal stability are critical.

Industries & applications:

  • Semiconductors & electronics → Wafer processing trays, chemical baths, insulative panels (high-purity, chemical-resistant).
  • Chemical processing → Linings, gaskets, and protective barriers (resistant to strong acids & solvents).
  • Food & pharmaceuticals → FDA-compliant sheets for sterile, non-stick contact surfaces.
  • Aerospace & automotive → Lightweight heat-resistant panels, chemical barriers in fuel/hydraulic systems.
  • Solar & photovoltaics → Transparent UV-resistant protective sheets.

Chosen where other plastics fail under chemical or temperature extremes, PFA sheets ensure reliability in high-demand industries.

PFA is one of the few fluoropolymers that can handle both extreme heat and harsh chemicals simultaneously.

Temperature resistance:

  • Continuous service up to 260 °C
  • Performs at cryogenic temps down to -200 °C

Chemical resistance:

  • Inert to nearly all industrial chemicals, acids, bases, and solvents
  • Resistant to stress cracking and permeation

Advantages over FEP:

  • FEP softens above ~200 °C, while PFA remains stable up to 260 °C
  • PFA has better long-term stress-crack resistance, ideal for high-pressure or aggressive conditions

Typical applications under harsh conditions:

  • Semiconductors → Ultrapure chemical baths
  • Pharmaceuticals → Sterile systems using strong cleaning agents
  • Aerospace → High-temperature insulation and protective linings

For environments with both heat and chemical extremes, PFA sheets are the gold standard.

Unlike PTFE, PFA is melt-processable, making it much easier to fabricate.

Fabrication methods:

  • Thermoforming → Softens at ~300 °C for vacuum/pressure forming
  • Welding → Heat-sealed or butt-welded for tanks, liners, and panels
  • Machining → Cut, drilled, and milled with standard plastic tools
  • Bonding → Etched sheets can be adhered with specialty adhesives

Customization options:

  • Etched / adhesive-backed sheets for bonding
  • Colored sheets for industry-specific coding
  • Embossed/patterned sheets for slip-resistant or decorative finishes

Common fabricated applications:

  • Chemical tanks & piping systems → corrosion-resistant construction
  • Food processing → Non-stick trays, hygienic liners
  • Semiconductors → Cleanroom panels and ultrapure baths

PFA sheets combine premium durability with fabrication versatility — making them the most adaptable fluoropolymer sheets available.
