PFA Extruded Rods – FAQs

PFA extruded rods are cylindrical semi-finished products made from perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) resin, a melt-processable fluoropolymer in the PTFE family. Unlike PTFE rods (which must be molded or ram extruded), PFA rods are manufactured by melt extrusion, producing continuous, high-quality stock.

Manufacturing process:

  1. Resin feeding → PFA pellets are introduced into an extruder.
  2. Melting → The polymer is heated to ~300 °C until flowable.
  3. Extrusion → The molten resin is pushed through a round die to form rods.
  4. Cooling & cutting → Rods are cooled and cut to standard lengths (1000 mm or 2000 mm).

Key advantages of PFA extruded rods:

  • Continuous extrusion → uniform diameter & surface finish
  • High service temperature: up to 260 °C (equal to PTFE)
  • Excellent chemical resistance (acids, bases, solvents)
  • Superior stress-crack resistance vs. FEP
  • Transparency (in thinner gauges) → enables visual monitoring

Best choice when: You need PTFE-like durability with easier fabrication and machining flexibility.

PFA extruded rods are manufactured in a wide range of sizes for precision machining and industrial use.

Diameter range:

  • Standard: 6 mm to 200 mm
  • Micro-diameters (<6 mm) available on request
  • Large diameters (>200 mm) usually require molding

Length range:

  • Standard rods: 1000 mm and 2000 mm
  • Custom cut lengths available on request

Surface finishes:

  • Natural rods → Smooth, translucent finish
  • Etched rods → Prepared for adhesive bonding
  • Colored rods → Pigmented for identification in industrial/medical uses

Whether you need micro-diameter precision stock or large billets, PFA rods are available in flexible size ranges.

PFA extruded rods are chosen in industries where high purity, extreme chemical resistance, and thermal stability are mandatory.

Key industries & applications:

  • Semiconductors & electronics → Wafer-processing parts, insulation components, chemical-resistant seals
  • Chemical processing → Valve seats, seals, gaskets for acid/solvent handling
  • Food & pharmaceuticals → FDA-compliant bushings, liners, and hygienic seals
  • Aerospace & automotive → Lightweight, high-heat-resistant bearings, bushings, and spacers
  • Medical & laboratory → Contamination-free rods for analytical and surgical instruments

If purity, resistance, and durability are critical, PFA rods are the go-to fluoropolymer stock.

While all three are fluoropolymers, their processing, temperature resistance, and applications differ.

PFA rods:

  • Melt-processable & extrudable
  • High service temp: ~260 °C
  • Better stress-crack resistance than FEP
  • Transparent → useful for inspection

PTFE rods:

  • Non-melt processable (requires molding or ram extrusion)
  • Same high service temp: ~260 °C
  • Opaque white, softer than PFA
  • More stable in compression-molded heavy-duty parts

FEP rods:

  • Melt-processable like PFA
  • Lower service temp: ~200 °C
  • Transparent, flexible, more cost-effective

 Summary guide:

  • Choose PFA rods → for high temp + chemical resistance + machinability
  • Choose PTFE rods → for stability in heavy-duty compression applications
  • Choose FEP rods → for cost-effective, transparent use under 200 °C

PFA rods are easy to machine and fabricate, offering excellent performance in demanding environments.

Machining characteristics:

  • Machines easily with standard plastic/metal tools
  • Harder & more rigid than PTFE → allows tighter tolerances
  • Produces smooth finishes with minimal polishing
  • Requires sharp tools to avoid smearing

Fabrication options:

  • Etching → Enables adhesive bonding
  • Pigmenting → Custom-colored rods for identification
  • Sterilisation-compatible → Withstands autoclaving, gamma radiation, and chemical cleaning

Typical machined parts from PFA rods:

  • Valve seats & seals for chemical handling
  • Pump housings in semiconductor equipment
  • Electrical insulators for aerospace & electronics
  • Bearings & bushings exposed to aggressive fluids

If your project requires parts that resist heat, chemicals, and stress — PFA extruded rods are the premium machining stock.
